This market is a commitment device to help me adhere to dietary buying rules until 31 December 2026 to improve my NAFLD and IBS symptoms. Building on the success of the 2025 iteration, this market represents "Version 2.0". Note: this is a highly personalized set of restrictions, not for everyone!
THE "NO-BUY" LIST
I must NOT buy the following items for my own consumption:
Drinks: All drinks except water and unsweetened tea.
Meat: Pork (any form), ground meat (mince/burgers), processed meats (sausages, salami, bacon, ham).
Sweets & Sugar: Candy, chocolate (incl. dark), sugar, honey, syrups.
Condiments: Sugary sauces (ketchup, BBQ, etc.) and sweet spreads (jams, nut butters with sugar).
Processed Food: Highly processed / ready-to-eat meals.
Dairy: High-Fat dairy (cream, cheese, etc.). Exceptions: pure yogurt/kefir, harzer/quargel, and cottage cheese (Körniger Frischkäse) are allowed and unlimited.
Grains: All flours, baked goods, and pasta (wheat, rye, oats, barley). Exception: pure spelt is allowed.
Fruit: Citrus fruits, dried fruits, sweet fruit purees (except allowed apple sauce).
THE FRUCTOSE BUDGET
I may buy fresh fruit (excl. citrus) or unsweetened apple sauce, subject to these limits:
Scope: This budget applies to fruit only. Fructose from vegetables is exempt.
Total Budget: Max. ~150g fructose per week.
Calculation: I will use an app/AI or the brand's nutrition label to estimate fructose content for all fruit and apple sauce purchases.
RATIONED STAPLES
I may buy these specific items up to the stated limits:
Spelt Ration: Max 1 kg per week total. (Includes spelt flour and dry spelt pasta/products).
Peanut Butter (100% peanuts): Max 500g per month.
Apple Sauce: Max 500g of unsweetened apple sauce per week.
Cheese Ration: Max 1 package (approx. 200g) per week.
Scope: applies to reduced-fat versions of standard cheese (e.g., light mozzarella, light feta).
Red Meat & Game Ration: Max 800g per month total.
Types: beef, venison, or game.
Cuts: whole, lean cuts only (e.g., filet, steak). No ground meat or high-fat cuts.
Poultry & Fish: poultry (chicken/turkey/etc.) and fish are allowed without quantity limits, provided they are not ground, breaded, or processed.
CHEAT DAY EXEMPTION
Frequency: One day per calendar month.
Allowed: Up to two restricted items.
EXCEPTIONS
Social: Rules do not apply when hosting guests, inviting/treating someone to a restaurant, or strictly buying food for others.
Accidental Purchase: If I buy a restricted item by mistake, the market does not resolve NO provided I do not consume the item.
RESOLUTION CRITERIA
Reporting: Honor System.
Failure: If I knowingly buy a restricted item (outside exceptions) or consume an accidental purchase, the market resolves NO.
Success: If I adhere to these rules until Dec 31, 2026, the market resolves YES.
Changes: Rules will not be changed to make the protocol easier. Adding foods to the banned or from allowed to rationed staples is permitted. "Bugfixes" (clarifications/friction reduction) are permitted.
