I originally created Stellar Bit to learn Rust and project management; it wasn't designed with the intention of being played by others. However, I’m now curious whether others might find it enjoyable. The game is fairly complex and has simple graphics, so I’m uncertain if it will appeal to anyone besides myself.

Resolution Criteria
This will resolve YES if, before the end of 2024, the game maintains a consistent daily user base for a full month on some public server. Otherwise, NO.

I’m willing to put up to 15 more hours of work if I believe there’s more than a 50% chance this goal can be achieved.

Currently, I'd say there is about 30% chance.

I will not invest in this market.

About the Game
Stellar Bit is a multiplayer 2D space game where players use Rust scripts to build and control spacecraft, allowing them to mine asteroids or engage in battles with other players for territory. Players can also host their own public servers with custom objectives.

Success in the game depends on the quality of the scripts players write. Those who develop superior scripts can achieve enhanced spacecraft control, improved fleet coordination, and more effective strategies.

Players can also seamlessly add visual interfaces to their scripted plugins, which then appear in-game. These visual elements allow for more direct and intuitive control.

The plan

  • make the game's design slightly better

  • create a few screenshots

  • organize a tournament with cash prizes and share it on relevant Reddit communities, such as Battlecode, Robotgame, Screeps, Halite, etc.

  • work on the server so that it can handle the tournament

@ReubenAdams Technically yes.

Looks interesting enough to sign up, at least. I haven't written anything in Rust for a few years, and this sounds like a fun way to refresh (relearn, really) the lang.

But something that always makes me hesitate about this style of game is that I know my bot will end up competing with the best the internet has to offer. Someone is surely going to develop an awesome, open-source bot, and everyone else copies it, tweaks a few variables (maybe) and uses it.

I'd rather play a single player campaign than multiplayer against that.

On the other hand, a must-have feature is for the official servers to have a few fully automated bots to play against, with various playstyles.

@DanHomerick Yeah, good point.

I agree, official singleplayer servers with bots would definitely exist.

Love to see more entries in the battlecode/robotgame/halite/screeps genre. Making onboarding easy for new players is probably a big challenge, though.
