How it started / How it’s going
——
Effective altruism: doing the most good you can / Manifold: fundraising so the worst politician can utter the least funny meme ever.
@NicoDelon Nearly all funds were donated with the intent of advertising Manifold to a broader audience through implicit celebrity endorsement.
@NicoDelon Not sure what you’re asking. It seems to me that the contributor of >90% of the funds was motivated to pay Santos to make a video in hopes that it would Manifold more publicity.
@oh I'm asking if the funds will be used to pay George Santos to record a Cameo where he uses the word 'rationalussy'. Is that a misdescription of what is going on? The intent is something else. I'm asking what is being done with the funds.
@NicoDelon It will indeed be used for that. As a side point, I was arguing that one could consider promoting Manifold to be an EA cause area.
@oh The side point is important, but color me skeptical that any reasonable EA analysis would support giving Santos $500 so he can utter the least funny meme ever. Why Santos rather than any other public figure? Why 'rationalussy'? Do we have any sense of how many users it would attract and how informed they would be?
I get the EA rationale behind Manifold (that's the 'How it started' part of the meme). I don't get how this has led to this utter absurdity (The 'How it's going' part).
@NicoDelon perhaps the confusion here is that my primary goal is to make money via a transformational consumer company that has a positive impact on the world (see, Twitter, Wikipedia) subject to not impeding the warm fuzzies that have gotten Manifold this far.
I make zero claims that the project is the best use of $ (that would be the maximum impact fund)
