J.J. Abrams seems to be in Director Jail since turning in two awful Star Wars movies (2015 and 2019, respectively), and two fine Star Trek films. According to IMDb, his next three directorial projects are all TV series.

Will JJ Abrams direct a movie in the 2020s?

The movie must open in at least one movie theater in the US, and must have a US release date before December 31st, 2029 for this to Resolve YES. JJ Abrams must be listed as a “Director” or “Co-Director” (think: The Russo Brothers, The Safdies, The Coens, D&D: Benioff and Weiss …etc.) as well.

I hope I’m wrong. Love the guy - besides Star Wars IX, I’ve had a blast in every movie of his I’ve seen.

Maybe a tv show

@emilio tv shows won’t count here. it looks like he’ll direct 3 of them though. maybe to earn his way back to a feature film

@mattyb earn? Respect him or not but his production company bad robot is a powerhouse in Hollywood. And again wether you like him or not he's helmed some of the most highest grossing movies in the last decade and that means just as much as being "good" when it comes to deciding on funding something. If he wanted to make a movie it would be greenlit in an instant.

@Shrewdan i think, the long and the short of it is, we just don’t know why he isn’t directing now.

TIL his daughter is Gracie Abrams (who had this banger last year), and he’s had multiple projects which MAX shitcanned (full article from an unknown source). I agree, if he wanted to make movies now, he’d likely be doing it.

@mattyb ya I'm curious the real story too. I mean I'd be hiding after that last Star wars (although that's probably as much Kathleen Kennedy's fault as anyone's).

Hollywood nepotism is strong. Like rich billionaire with no inheritance tax strong lol.

Pretty sure JJ himself is a nepo baby.

@Shrewdan Yep. Mom was a television and film producer. Dad was a television producer
