Yes, the modern day controversy is just a repeat of the cultural puritanisms over anti-art, expressionism, etc
Although today it has at least some real, good reasons (too little real freedom for artistic expression, too much control by industries, political-class interests, etc, of art, a lot of loss of meaning, devaluation of the individual artist and non-franchise; schism of artistic endeavours, ...)
Unfortunately noone cares to debate them on their own merits, so we have this regressivism, and pure, financial interests fighting
