Yes, the modern day controversy is just a repeat of the cultural puritanisms over anti-art, expressionism, etc

Although today it has at least some real, good reasons (too little real freedom for artistic expression, too much control by industries, political-class interests, etc, of art, a lot of loss of meaning, devaluation of the individual artist and non-franchise; schism of artistic endeavours, ...)

Unfortunately noone cares to debate them on their own merits, so we have this regressivism, and pure, financial interests fighting

Yes but real art is an extremely broad (and not very useful) category. Most smudged receipts are real art, I still throw them out eventually.
