The UN Credentials Committee approves each member's representation. In Dec 2021 the committee voted to defer whether to recognize the Taliban's desired representative to the UN. Currently representation of Afghanistan is still held by an appointee of the previous democratic government. The Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan generally lacks international recognition.
