The Global Peace Index (GPI) is published every June. The GPI scores countries on a composite of various measures of peacefulness. Scores for every country for every year are available in an interactive map on Vision of Humanity's website.

Will the average GPI score rise in the 2024 report for the Middle East? For reference, here are the scores for countries in the Middle East from the GPI 2023 Report, ordered from least to most peaceful.

  1. Yemen (3.486)

  2. Syria (3.460)

  3. Iraq (3.006)

  4. Iran (2.800)

  5. Turkey (2.800)

  6. Israel (2.706)

  7. Lebanon (2.581)

  8. Palestine (2.538)

  9. Egypt (2.267)

  10. Saudi Arabia (2.260)

  11. Bahrain (2.145)

  12. United Arab Emirates (1.979)

  13. Cyprus (1.904)

  14. Jordan (1.895)

  15. Oman (1.794)

  16. Kuwait (1.669)

  17. Qatar (1.524)

The region average score from the GPI 2023 report was therefore 2.401. This is not population-adjusted, which is also how GPI does regional scores.

The Global Peace Index report for 2024 was published earlier last month. I've taken all of the entries for the Mideast and compared them to the 2023 numbers I listed in the description of this question.

On average, the Middle East became less peaceful in 2024:
