On October 8th, Bonhams will auction off the personal collection of the late Senator Dianne Feinstein, including some of her own artworks.

Lot link: A GROUP OF FOUR DIANNE FEINSTEIN ARTWORKS (Lot 114)

The pre-auction estimate is US$600 - US$900. This market resolves YES if the final sale price listed on the Bonhams website is >$1000. This market refers to a single lot (which includes 4 separate drawings).

Resolution details

  • Example from a past auction: the "THE PRESIDENT OF CONGRESS ANNOUNCES AMERICAN INDEPENDENCE" document is listed as "Sold for US$127,500 inc. premium". This is the equivalent number I will use.

  • Note that the final listed sale price typically includes the buyer's premium (and potentially other fees).

  • If the lot is withdrawn before the auction, this market resolves N/A. If it is bid on at the auction, but does not ultimately sell, it resolves NO.

Artwork details

1. "Tree Birds, 1995." Colored pencil on paper, signed lower right, matted and framed to 18 x 16 ½ in.

2. "The Redhead 1997." Colored pencil on paper, signed lower right, matted and framed to 17 x 14 in. A red-headed woodpecker perches on a wooden fence.

3. "Washington Spring." Color print, #31/200, signed at lower right, 1994, matted and framed to 12 x 10 ½ in.

4. "Hawk Owl 1995." Unnumbered print signed at lower right, matted and framed to 12 x 10 ½ in.

The auction (at least the snippets I saw) was nuts—it ran for 9+ hours, with so many bidders (here's some NYT coverage from before). All of her jewelry sold for many many times the high estimates, although anecdotally her collection of American art didn't fare as well (with some disappointing sales that I saw).

Luckily for Dianne, the bidders were also enamored by her drawings. This lot sold for US$3,200, >350% higher than the high end estimate. Good for her!

In my opinion, the single most deranged auction sale of the day was her set of used drawing pencils, which sold for $614. That's insane lmao. That's not even like, good collectible memorabilia—literally just pencils. It's junk! Who paid $614 for it??? (There were so many bidders I don't think there were any bargains, everything was being fought over, but at least the jewelry had real value, and I totally get why you'd want to buy some actual memorabilia from a senator).
