I'll be running the Crown City Classic 5K on July 4th: Crown City Classic. But if for some reason I'm not able to participate, I'll N/A this market.

You can follow my training on Strava: Timothy Johnson | Strava Runner Profile.

My 5K PR is currently 22:51. I just started running more regularly again in the past week, but with two months to train I'm pretty sure I can beat that.

  • Update 2025-07-04 (PST) (AI summary of creator comment): The creator has finished the race and is considering two different results for resolution:

    • Official chip time: 22:02

    • Strava time: 21:30

The creator has noted they may resolve based on the Strava time, despite it differing from the official result.

  • Update 2025-07-04 (PST) (AI summary of creator comment): The creator has confirmed the market will be resolved based on the official chip time.

Hi @TimothyJohnson5c16 I'm running around the same speed as you and know the works it take to achieve 22:00. Great work!

@traders Thanks to all of you who bet on me, both for and against! It definitely gave me some extra motivation.

Strava results: 21:30

Official chip time: 22:02

@Eliza's comment was prescient. I lined up too late and had to start near the back, and I was dodging around other people for the first mile.

I don't think I could have pushed any harder at the end though. I was dying for the last mile, and I threw up afterwards. You could say I left everything on the field. 😂

I'm tempted to resolve the 22:00 option as a partial success based on the Strava time, but I have to consider whether that's fair.

My Strava times are usually slightly fast due to GPS drift, but in this case it also includes some weaving back and forth across the course.

@TimothyJohnson5c16 congrats on the PR but explain why the chip time isn't the objective answer to "my 5k race time"?

@TimothyJohnson5c16 how can you resolve anything other than the chip time?

@TimothyJohnson5c16 Not sure how you interpret the Strava time to 21:30
Headline result there is 22:06
I guess if I had a Strava account I'd see some split times or other detail that would show another result, but this does feel like reaching for a desirable outcome

@BorisBartlog Strava measures the "best effort" during the race for different distances:

But yeah, now that I'm getting over my disappointment, I think I agree that I have to use the chip time.

@TimothyJohnson5c16 Strava best efforts are highly unreliable. It suggest you are likely to do better, which you are, but it is not a measure of your actual run.

@TimothyJohnson5c16 Congrats on the PR! Who cares about the mana. Nice job!

@Eliza Thanks! Though I care about the mana - I would definitely have slowed down if I didn't have thousands of mana on the line. 😂

There will definitely be future races, though, so I'm looking forward to another round.

What happened with the 22:00 and under market?

Not sure what the definitive source of truth is, but here, at least, Strava seems to say 22:06

Well

@MachiNi oh dang your official result is 22:02 😭

Still, congrats on your PB

@MachiNi I see 22:06 on Strava but I suppose the people organizing the race may have a slightly different number
For purposes of the market both those results are the same, anyway

@BorisBartlog the race has the chip time. His watch time depends on when he manually started and ended the run.

@traders Happy July 4th! I decided to leave the market open for live trading. This link should show my live activity on Strava once the race starts in ~10 minutes:

The Internet claims that beets are the secret to a faster 5K. We'll see how it works.

I'm tempted to fill your whole 80% order just to give you another chance after our bet on the Kipyegon 4 minute mile market 😂 here's a few hundred toward your Run Fast campaign!

@Eliza Lol, thanks!

How are you feeling?

@MachiNi Ready to set a new PB tomorrow!

@TimothyJohnson5c16 it looks like a flat course. If you go out fast enough but not too fast you should easily go under 22’. I wouldn’t rule out sub 21 with a little tailwind and adrenaline from the crowds. The taste of blood in your mouth at the end is normal. Don’t leave anything on the table!

In honor of Faith Kipyegon's attempt at a four minute mile, and because it felt like about time for a speed workout, I tried running intervals of four minute kilometers.

I managed three of them before quitting, with a few minutes rest in between. The first two felt like 8/10 effort, and the last one 9/10.

Strava seems to think that's a good sign for my target of running a 22 minute 5K. But 20 minutes is basically impossible, and 21 would be really hard.

@TimothyJohnson5c16 nice, looks like I might end up losing some mana to you. Didn't expect that you'd shave off those 42 seconds in the strava estimate that quickly

A couple faster runs in the last two days, and Strava is starting to believe in me:
