Resolution criteria
The Diocese of Eichstätt has been vacant since June 2025 when Bishop Gregor Maria Franz Hanke resigned. The market resolves to whichever candidate is officially appointed as Bishop of Eichstätt (before the end of the year 2026) by the Vatican. Resolution will be confirmed via official Vatican announcements at https://press.vatican.va or the Diocese of Eichstätt's official website at https://www.bistum-eichstaett.de/. If none of the listed candidates is appointed or no bishop is appointed before the end of the year 2026, the market resolves to "Someone else / No appointment".
Background
The Diocese of Eichstätt is a Latin Church diocese of the Catholic Church in Bavaria, subordinate to the archbishop of Bamberg. The diocese was created in 745 and was a state in the Holy Roman Empire until 1803. Bishop appointments are made by the Pope and typically follow a formal selection process involving consultation with local clergy and church officials.
Considerations
Bishop Hanke was one of four German residential bishops who criticized the Synodal Path and refused to use church tax money to finance the synodal committee. The appointment may reflect the Vatican's approach to this ongoing debate within the German Church.

@SimonCdNQ9 Nominative determinism… 😁 Then again, maybe they don't want a bishop that walks like a wolf.
@4fa Wolfgang Bischof is already auxiliary bishop in München-Freising. So maybe nominative determinism did its magic 😂
@4fa Unfortunately not; he is the rector of the Fulda Seminary and chairman of the German Conference of Rectors. 😂
