Background

The second Test between England and India is scheduled from July 2 to July 6, 2025, at Edgbaston, Birmingham. (espn.co.uk) This match is part of the five-Test series in the 2025-27 ICC World Test Championship cycle. (reuters.com)

England leads the series 1-0 after a five-wicket victory in the first Test at Headingley. (reuters.com) Fast bowler Jofra Archer has been added to England's squad for the second Test, marking his return to Test cricket after a prolonged injury absence. (reuters.com)

India's head coach Gautam Gambhir has indicated that Jasprit Bumrah will play in only three of the five Tests to manage his workload, though specific matches have not been confirmed. (reuters.com)

Considerations

  • Bumrah's Participation: Given the plan to rest Bumrah for two of the five Tests, his inclusion in the playing XI for the second Test remains uncertain.

  • Player Form: Shubman Gill and Joe Root are key batsmen for their respective teams. Gill's performance will be under scrutiny as he steps into a leadership role following the retirements of senior players. (reuters.com)

  • Match Outcomes: Test matches can end in a win, draw, or tie. A draw occurs when neither team can force a result within the allotted time, while a tie is extremely rare, occurring when both teams finish with the same total runs after all innings.

@PrijwalNaidu If England all out for 179 or less in 2nd innings but India have started 2nd innings does this resolve no as India second innings has started? or yes as India second innings was not needed? Or does it depend on India average innings total being more than England total of 2 innings? or something else?

@ChristopherRandles Will be No. I just didn’t get to it yet.
