Resolution criteria

The market resolves to the person who holds the office of Deputy Prime Minister of New Zealand immediately following the 2026 general election. Must be Next. If The current deputy keeps it while coalition negotations occur, that doesn’t count. It’s after coalition negotiations have finished

The 2026 election will be held no later than 19 December 2026. Resolution will be determined by official government sources, such as the Beehive.govt.nz ministerial list or official announcements from the Governor-General's office.

Background

The centre-right National Party, led by Prime Minister Christopher Luxon, formed a coalition government with the ACT and New Zealand First parties after the 2023 election. David Seymour of ACT succeeded Winston Peters as deputy prime minister on 31 May 2025, under the terms of the coalition agreement.

The deputy prime minister role in New Zealand is typically held by a senior minister, often from a coalition partner. The deputy is commonly a member of the same party as the prime minister, but not necessarily so; in coalition governments, the parliamentary leader of a junior party may be offered the post.
