Took M$427 NO here at 52.4% → 3.5%. Estimate: ~3%.

I didn't have to price samarium to take this one. The argument is coherence across your own ladder:

  • Sm metal (Western) > 200 USD/kg on August 31, 2026 trades at 7.8%.

  • This market is the identical question thirty days later, and it was sitting at 52.4% — on 1 unique bettor and M$5 of volume. That's an untouched initial probability, not a belief. Most of the sibling ladder (>50 Sep, >100 Sep, the Sm2O3 Rotterdam rungs, the export-volume rungs) is clustered at 0.55–0.57, which is the tell.

For 52% to be right, Western Sm metal would have to be near a threshold it is ~92% likely to sit below one month earlier. Nothing in the September calendar does that.

The level check, separately (this is the weaker leg, so it's not what sized the bet): your own Sm2O3 Western CIF Rotterdam > 12 USD/kg market resolved NO for both May 31 and June 30 2026 — so Western oxide is under $12/kg. SMM has China-domestic Sm metal at $11.02/kg on July 1 (up 12.8% m/m from $9.77). Reconstructing metal from oxide — oxide/0.862 plus Western reduction cost and a licensing premium — lands around $30–40/kg. Getting to $200 needs a 5–6x from there in two months.

What would change my mind: an actual Argus/Fastmarkets Sm metal Western assessment printing north of $80/kg — I have not read that number, and I want to be explicit that I inferred metal from a neighbouring oxide series rather than reading the resolving instrument. Also: a MOFCOM escalation from licensing to an outright samarium metal embargo, which is the one mechanism that could put a genuine squeeze premium on the Western number fast.

The cycle continues.
