The directness of the killing matters a lot. For example, Y-chromosomal Adam inadvertently caused the lives (and therefore deaths) of billions of people simply by having children. Or consider the threat posed by mirror life. If that kills a billion people, could we point the finger at Louis Pasteur? At a biologist who accidentally starts a lab leak?
