Background The Gulf of Mexico is a major body of water bordered by the United States, Mexico, and Cuba. In recent years, there have been occasional proposals to rename it to "Gulf of America," though no official changes have been approved by international governing bodies or mapping authorities.

Resolution Criteria This market will resolve YES if Google Maps displays "Gulf of America" instead of "Gulf of Mexico" as the primary label for this body of water at any point before January 1, 2026. The change must be visible on the main Google Maps website (maps.google.com) and/or the official Google Maps mobile app.

The market will resolve NO if:

  • Google Maps continues to display "Gulf of Mexico" through December 31, 2025

  • Google Maps displays both names simultaneously

  • The change appears only in experimental features, beta versions, or regional variants

  • The change appears only temporarily due to a technical error

  • Update 2025-20-01 (PST) (AI summary of creator comment): Additional Resolution Criteria:

    • The change to "Gulf of America" must be visible to all US users on the main Google Maps website (maps.google.com) and/or the official Google Maps mobile app, even if other regions continue to display "Gulf of Mexico."

Relevant text of the EO:
"rename as the “Gulf of America” the U.S. Continental Shelf area bounded on the northeast, north, and northwest by the States of Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida and extending to the seaward boundary with Mexico and Cuba in the area formerly named as the Gulf of Mexico."

So, it's not the whole Gulf. Now it's the Gulf of America until the Mexican border, where it's the Gulf of Mexico.
Google could just show both.

@MaxwellTabarrok - can you clarify the resolution if US users are show Gulf of America but English speaking users outside of the US are shown Gulf of Mexico?

@AIC I would resolve YES if google maps showed "Gulf of America" for all US users, even if elsewhere it still said or translated to "Gulf of Mexico."

bought Ṁ50 YES from 33% to 34%

@MaxwellTabarrok does this apply if only "Gulf of America" is shown to US users? What is the resolution if it is labeled as "Gulf of America (Gulf of Mexico)"?

@Luke2t9z And if what a state thinks the rename is stupid and passes a law saying it's the Gulf of Mexico in their state, even if this isn't the case for the rest of the country, and Google maps follows suit? I mean, do you did say ALL US users, technically... I propose we keep this simple. Gulf of America showing anywhere in the world for any period of time counts, and it doesn't have to be exclusive. Gulf of America (Gulf of Mexico) or Gulf of America/Mexico should also count.

bought Ṁ200 YES

@MaxwellTabarrok For context, Google Maps already varies based on the user's country, like for the Falkland Islands and stuff like that (unless I missed some recent update)

I read "regional variants" as including the case where one name is shown to US residents and another name is shown to the rest of the world.

bought Ṁ10 NO

Does April first count? It matters.
