I realize this market resolved several months ago in a direction in line with this comment with nobody even trying to defend the YES position, but to dogpile further on the NO side retroactively: nobody here mentioned the benefits of the affordance of plastic straws for those who cannot use metal straws
I have now on multiple occasions been out with a disabled friend who cannot drink from a cup without a straw and she has been unable to drink with her meal at all. (Metal straws do not work in her circumstance due to risk of injury, and need for sustained cleaning and care she cannot readily provide. Paper straws are objectively worse given the rate at which she consumes food/beverages meaning they easily crush on one hand and on the other turn to mush when they are available, if at all. She should not have to spare room in her already crowded day-to-day kit to carry plastic straws she may no longer be able to readily buy in the future, to boot.)
