Background

Microsoft recently announced the development of the Majorana 1 chip, which uses a new Topological Core architecture and special materials called topoconductors to create and control Majorana quasiparticles. These particles are used to create more stable and scalable qubits for quantum computing. The current chip contains 8 topological qubits, with plans to scale up to 1 million qubits on a single chip.

Resolution Criteria

The market will resolve YES if Microsoft has successfully demonstrated the creation and control of at least one Majorana qubit through peer-reviewed research or verifiable technical documentation by the resolution date. The market will resolve NO if:

  • Microsoft's claims are retracted

  • Independent verification shows the qubits are not true Majorana qubits

  • The technology is shown to not work as claimed

Considerations

While Microsoft has announced this breakthrough, the technology is still in development and requires further engineering work. The scientific community may need time to independently verify these claims and assess whether they represent true Majorana qubits as defined in quantum physics.
