California frequently declines admission to thousands of students who meet the UC requirements. Will California open a new UC before 2030? If UCSF opens an undergraduate campus this will resolve as yes.
@spiderduckpig I also highly doubt a university can go from the planning phase to opening that fast. For UC Merced, it took 6 years from site selection and appointment of a chancellor to opening, and 17 years from approval of the new campus to opening. Additionally, raising funds will be difficult, I doubt the federal government will want to contribute, when they have already chosen not to fund UCHSR.
@spiderduckpig The UC's 2030 capacity plan wants to add around 33k of capacity by expanding existing campuses, though there was a proposal from 2024 where the SF mayor asked for a new undergrad campus in downtown SF. Though I wonder if that is still in play given the AI boom has undoubtedly dropped SF commercial vacancy and diminished the need for downtown revitalization a bit
