Manifold is currently running into some moderation issues.

Currently, these are not being handled very well. Manifold themselves is pretty slow to respond, with spammers often not being dealt with for many days after being reported, and they can continue to spam in the mean time.

Market creators are given very limited tools to police our own comment sections; we can only hide comments and block people entirely. These are simply not good enough to maintain control over our comment sections and foster the community we're trying to build.

This market resolves based on whether I feel that the situation has significantly improved to the point where a lack of moderation is no longer a serious active issue for me using the platform. No specific features are a requirement for this, but some potential ideas are:

  • Delegate the banning of spammers to trustworthyish users, with some way for the banned user to escalate the issue to an admin if they want to contest it.

  • Impliment an easy way to dole out IP bans, preventing people from simply making a new account and continuing where they left off within minutes.

  • Require some sort of identity verification when signing up, to make it harder to create multiple accounts.

  • Move hidden comments to the bottom of a market's comment section, unless they recieved several likes or replies, in which case they should still be displayed higher.

  • Give market creators the ability to ban someone from commenting on one of their markets and not the others.

  • Give market creators the option to ban someone from commenting without imposing pointless costs on that creator, such as them being unable to see or hide the user's existing comments anymore.

  • Allow market creators to set a time limit after which a commenting ban will expire.

  • Reimpliment the untrustworthy badge and give the community the ability to flag creators who have handled markets dishonorably in the past.

You might think you're creating this market to incentivize the admins; but I think it's really incentivizing Mark Ingraham. Giving him a clear goal, attention, etc. And I suspect Mark will win this round.

Most people are normal, but there’s three or four weirdos who just ruin it for everyone!

Does the wisdom of crowds apply when it's all just the same person?

@IsaacKing Scott Alexander suggests it applies a little bit, but I don’t think he meant it like this…

@JohnSmithb9be As long there are a few people willing to profit off of the the one rando, then YES.

I'm the problem. 90% of the sites users are me.
