This only counts Manifold deciding to take it away from BTE personally. It does not count Manifold choosing to remove the "Trustworthy. Ish." badge from all traders, or reword the general criteria that badge-holders must meet, nor a bug that makes it not display on their profile, or anything like that.
If BTE asks Manifold to take away the badge, that also does not count. It must be Manifold's descision.
If they're banned from the platform, that counts to resolve this to YES. If they voluntarily quit the platform, that doesn't count.
I was the original person to badge BTE, I think as part of the original rolling out of the Trustworthy-ish program more than a year ago. At the time, BTE was a generally active creator who seemed to be very excited about Manifold. Our community was a lot smaller and the badge program was pretty tongue-in-cheek (Trustworthy-ish was just a cosmetic flair), so this seemed quite reasonable.
Since then, we've added a bunch of powers to the role, renamed it to "Moderator", and started relying on these folks for the upkeep of our site. At the same time, BTE's activity on the site waned; he also started having more of a bone to pick with the Manifold staff, including attacking us personally. From two weeks ago:
@BTE I'm sorry that you were wrongly accused here. But also you've been like, pretty antagonistic against the Manifold core team lately and I think that colors our impressions of you. (I know it's a bit grating for me personally, when we've been spending our time over the last couple of years trying to make this site a good experience for y'all). I think if you aimed to play nice (or at least civil), you would tend to get more benefit of the doubt.
As he's been a consistently active market creator and trader, but less so a person who contributes to moderator decisions, I supported the idea of de-badging him.
I do think our process was not ideal here -- iiuc Stephen is the one who did the de-badging, but it would have been better for David to communicate and roll this change out as David has more context and is the implicit "owner" of community management. (One issue with the do-ocratic nature of Manifold is that sometimes it really is better to consolidate roles.) But this doesn't change my view of BTE's badge status as of now. I would be happy to re-badge BTE if he makes a positive effort to be a good citizen among the Manifold community.
@Austin Thanks for commenting! I think very few people object to the debadging itself, it was just the (lack of) communication involved.
@MarcusAbramovitch I agree with the statement but I don't see how that implies they all have to be moderators.
Edit: I'm an idiot.
@SirSalty Could you confirm that the removal of BTE's badge was an intentional choice by Manifold, and not an error?
No reason was provided, and there doesn't seem to be anything they did that would warrant removal, so we're all a little confused here.
@jacksonpolack That could have been old, back when they thought BTE had hid the comments intentionally.
@jacksonpolack to be "sort of fair" that nathan guy has gotten on my nerves too. Although I think it's a little silly to think BTE was unaware "hide" was a mod tool.
I don’t approve of what is happening - the reason given for removing is not even the reason this all started if understand correctly. I wonder if this is maybe personal?
At the start of the whole thing you had stuff like this
which gives the impression that atleast some people wanted to remove the badge and just hanged on to the first reason they could find. Also after hearing BTE’s explanation instead of thinking, what can be done to ensure no one in the same situation is confused by the horrible product UX they punish BTE.
@jacksonpolack The whole thing I feel is orchestrated as an attack on BTE’s character even the phrasing of the question “Is he trustworthy ..”. They started by saying he was hiding comments although the product clearly did not make it clear he was doing that for everyone. So instead of owning up and saying they fucked up product UX they attack his chatacter.
@Soli MY strike will begin now and go on for the next 7 days. If I log in back and the decision is not reversed I will consider extending my strike :P
@Soli I suspect you may be seeing things significantly out of context. This specific instance is just one part of it. People have raised many complaints before (see the earlier comments in this market) about mistakes, oversights, rushed incorrect decisions, etc from BTE. BTE has created a ton of great markets, nobody is disputing that. So I say BTE should have a "top author" badge. But where BTE has made some mistakes is in exactly the areas where moderators need to exercise their powers carefully.
@IsaacKing fixed it now - it will take a while to fix my profits though but l learned my lesson - Mana should not be used for social causes :P
