The June election is on June 2nd. The California vote result certification is on July 2nd. SMART is the Sonoma-Marin Area Rail Transit system, the North Bay’s regional passenger rail and pathway network. Voters in Sonoma and Marin counties are being asked whether to renew SMART’s existing quarter-cent sales tax for another 30 years. The measure would keep funding the rail system, operations without increasing the tax rate. Because it is a voter initiative, it needs only a simple majority, or 50% plus one vote, to pass rather than the two-thirds threshold that applies to many local tax measures.
