As of june 30 2027 I'll use the best paid computer use api (from openai, anthropic, or a new, legal-to-use in the USA company) for up to 500$/month and try to do price comparisons on products which are available on both ebay and amazon.
I'll have the computer use api do this as a normal user, not through any apis - i.e. by typing a search string, scrolling around and trying to compare items, while allegedly deciding what to buy. My directions to it will be just things like "find the cheapest price on raw cinnamon available online, per ounce" or things like that.
If the computer use api can do this without my intervention, and it really does achieve as good or better information as I could have done on my own, then YES, the consumer has won.
If any of these happen, then NO
either ebay or amazon can't be searched by this tool as I would be able to myself
it won't work unless I share live video of me to prove personhood, which the computer use api can't do well. (If it CAN fake live video of me, well, that's fine, let's go, as long as the system is willing to do it)
either site appears to let me see information but is actually detecting the computer use api and attempting to trick it by not giving as good prices or manipulating what I see
the sites just block me when i use computer use api
either of the companies has caused laws to be put into place which make this product not exist
openai, and all others available in the market don't support even attempting to overcome even super lame easy captchas introduce into normal user flows by amazon which attempt to stop this.
it all works but I have to keep checking and clicking boxes, validating my ID etc to make it work. (it has to work from start to finish - fire query, get result, no intermediate friction steps)
So overall the thematic meaning of the question is: will computer use APIs (or just things like deep research next version) at the END of the market (exactly) allow consumers to do much better price comparisons than they can do now (broader searches + better information + lower time cost)
