Resolution criteria

This market resolves independently for each listed political party based on which party wins majority control of the United States House of Representatives in the election referenced:

  • Republican: Resolves YES if the Republican Party wins at least 218 seats in the U.S. House of Representatives as determined by major decision desks (e.g., AP News), or otherwise officially holds majority control when the subsequent Congress convenes. Otherwise, resolves NO.

  • Democratic: Resolves YES if the Democratic Party wins at least 218 seats in the U.S. House of Representatives as determined by major decision desks (e.g., AP News), or otherwise officially holds majority control when the subsequent Congress convenes. Otherwise, resolves NO.

If control is not projected on election night due to close races or ongoing tabulations, the market will remain open until major networks project the party that secures the 218-seat threshold. Any independent representative who officially caucuses with a party will count toward that party's total for majority determination.

Background

The U.S. House of Representatives comprises 435 voting seats, meaning 218 seats are required for an outright majority. Control of the chamber determines the Speakership, committee assignments, and the legislative agenda. In tight election cycles, late-counted mail-in and provisional ballots in key competitive districts can delay the formal projection of House control for several days or weeks following election day.
