I don't think we have a good enough definition of the word "conscious" for this market to ever resolve. We will eventually map and simulate a chicken brain and go back to arguing semantics on this one.

Why must neuroscience be solved first? Chickens are aware of themselves and the world around them. They are surprisingly smart.
