Here's my take: you don't put yourself in that situation if you really love meat, want to keep eating it, and don't care about the impact your choices have.

You do put yourself in that situation if you're having ethical concerns about eating meat, are okay with stopping, and think having some pet chickens would be fun.

She's a strong person. Of course she can steel herself and kill the chickens. The real question is "does she even want to?"

The chickens will live. It'll be a good reminder for herself why she's gone vegetarian. "Accidentally" doing it in public is a good way to get other people to also consider their choices, but not be all preachy about it.
