NASA is examining how to address unexpected erosion in the Orion spacecraft’s heat shield, observed during Artemis I. The increased erosion would still have allowed astronauts to return safely, but is concerning regardless. Having not yet determined the root cause, they are considering taking apart the capsule and doing a more thorough investigation. If they do so, since they were planning to stack the rocket a month from now, the Artemis II mission could be delayed to 2027. Other options to fix the problem are also being considered.
