https://www.politico.com/newsletters/playbook/2024/11/14/gaetz-pick-sends-gop-into-panic-00189534 I'm starting to think Trump didn't pick gaetz as a test of faith and that he just picked him on a whim

@Marnix There were a ton of reports of Trump deciding something during his first term based on the last person he talked to. I wouldn't be surprised if this was true.

edit: never mind. I’m sticking with my resolution criteria and kicking myself for omitting an obvious loophole! (As, I assume, are senate republicans.)

bought Ṁ50 Matt Gaetz NO

This one's getting some actual pushback, it seems. Might be the first failed nomination we see

@Marnix LMFAO! If people, including Senator Susan Collins, think there is going to be pushback and getting Trump "back in line" during the next 4 years then they haven't been paying any attention. Same goes for the people who voted for him. This administration will do what it wants, when it wants. Get on board, get out of the way, or get run over. I just don't get it. Everyone was warned about it for years now and they are so shocked and flabbergasted with some of the appointments so far. It's actually kind of funny.

@Predictor See, in most cases I'd agree, but even Republicans hate Gaetz specifically. He's an embarrassment — him being a creep with underaged girls is gonna be way harder to overlook when it's the Attorney General. The reporting I've seen is that Republicans do not like this nomination.

@Marnix Yeah, I think he earned a lot of bad will in the house with his anti-mccarthy shenanigans... to say nothing of the general optics of having a sex pest fill the spot. From politico:

>House Republicans had concerns about the pick as well, especially after watching Gaetz lead the ouster effort against former Speaker Kevin McCarthy that threw their chamber into chaos last year. Centrist Rep. Don Bacon (R-Neb.) said he had “no good comment.” Trump and McCarthy ally Rep. Max Miller (R-Ohio) called it “a reckless pick.”

>“I think he has a zero percent shot of getting through the Senate,” Miller added.

Collins is a no and will likely resist pressure to bend. My gut says Murkowski will follow suit. Are there two other senators willing to buck Trump?

@Marnix It's a test. Trust me.

@VerySeriousPoster Not sure exactly who the other two could be, but I feel like they exist. Could even be one of the nominees Trump didn't endorse in the primaries - maybe that new guy from Utah

@Predictor I'm sure he means it as a loyalty test. But Senate terms are six years and senators have egos. There are plenty of Gaetz-haters among the loyalists, and it only takes a handful to defect.

@Predictor I dunno, I feel like if that House ethics committee report comes out — and in a full senate confirmation, it feels more than likely it will — it'll be really hard for him to reassure them. I might just be naïve though 😛

@Marnix That’s not coming out.

sold Ṁ197 John Ratcliffe NO

@Predictor you should make a market for it, it seems like an interesting question! 😛

@Marnix I currently have a balance of -211,508. If you throw some mana my way to make the question I can get it going.

@Predictor I don't have that much on hand (just had 5k unresolve), but if you give me the resolution requirements you had in mind I can put it together. I'll be honest, I'm fully expecting it to leak and then be discussed by the Senate, if nothing else - idk if you had that in mind as well
