I think I had the most fun reading Dreyer's English, not listed among the answers.

I'll send manalinks to people if I read and like the suggested books.

@TimothyCurrie I stopped reading its Russian translation ages ago (wasn’t really engaging), should I give it another try?

@ms Yes, I think you should : ). And the second and third book are even better than the first.

@NoaNabeshima I’ve read the first book quite some time ago, liked it back then

@dgga I’ve read that

@ms ah, great taste friend

what sorts of books do you like, etc?

@ian sci-fi and other fiction, mostly. Love great worldbuilding and complex characters; absolutely love moments where you think you understand how the story was set up for what's happening, but then there's something more, some thing from earlier that's also involved in the setup and what's happening, and you've forgotten about it, but now understand, that the actual reason for it was what's happening now.

My exposure to English literature is somewhat limited. I've recently read The Player of Games and liked it; I enjoy stories of the kind Yudkowsky can write for r/HFY. Books like what Naomi Novik writes can be great.
