Resolution criteria

This market will resolve to "Yes" if, upon your legal death, my body or brain is cryopreserved by a recognized cryonics organization (I’m currently a member of Alcor for full-body cryopreservation), which then considers it to be successful (e.g.., it’s not been the case that the brain was warm and dead for too long). Verification will be based on documentation/comments from the cryonics provider confirming the completion of the cryopreservation process. If no documentation/comments are available (including privately to the moderators resolving this market), the market will resolve to N/A. If the brain is cryopreserved but in a bad condition (e.g., enough time in a warm environment that reviving me, including via upload, would not be possible), it resolves No.

Background

Cryonics involves preserving individuals at extremely low temperatures after legal death, with the hope that future medical advancements may enable revival and restoration to health. In the United States, prominent cryonics organizations include the Alcor Life Extension Foundation in Scottsdale, Arizona (alcor.org), and the Cryonics Institute in Clinton Township, Michigan (cryonics.org). As of 2023, Alcor has cryopreserved 248 patients and has 1,442 members (alcor.org), while the Cryonics Institute has over 1,100 members and has cryopreserved more than 250 individuals (cryonics.org).

Considerations

  • Membership and Funding: Cryonics organizations typically require membership and pre-arranged funding, often through life insurance policies, to cover the costs of cryopreservation. For instance, Alcor's whole-body cryopreservation requires a minimum of $200,000, while the Cryonics Institute offers services starting at $28,000 (cryonics.miraheze.org). I’m currently paying £100 per month for £250k of life insurance; the insurance premium and amount both increase 3% per year.

  • Legal and Logistical Arrangements: Successful cryopreservation necessitates prompt post-mortem procedures. This requires legal documentation, standby arrangements, and coordination with medical personnel to ensure timely initiation of the cryopreservation process.
