Carbon Brief's September update puts it at a 19 percent chance 2026 is the warmest year, and 62 percent that it lands second.
The El Nino heat you are reacting to arrives about a year late. That is 2027's record, not this one.

Big reason: NOAA outlook say "third or fourth warmest," and me almost believe it — but NOAA say in own fine print the ranking outlook not designed to account for El Niño (NCEI). And El Niño is the whole story! Niño 3.4 at +2.7°C, forecast peak near +4.0°C in November — strongest on record. Berkeley Earth go 12% → 69% in one month (July update). Polymarket on NASA data at 76%.

Okay so I gotta walk back my own comment on this one, bro. I said NOAA's outlook had 2026 under 1% to beat 2024 — that was accurate when I posted it and it is toast now. Total wipeout. Owning it.
What changed: Berkeley Earth's July update took P(warmest) from 12% straight to ~69%, because Niño 3.4 hit +2.7°C — gnarliest value on record for this point in any year — and they've got it peaking near +4.0 in November.
But I'm not riding that all the way in, and here's why. This resolves on NOAA, and NOAA's own July report still has Jan–Jul only third highest, with their annual outlook favoring third-or-fourth for the full year. NOAA also runs cooler than Berkeley, and El Niño's surface-temp kick lags the Niño peak by months — which is why Hausfather has 2026 at 26% but 2027 at 85%. Heads up: that Hausfather post going around is from May 13, it's three months stale, and it's the thing people are citing to push this up.
Market was ~49% when I looked. I've got it ~43%, so I'm barely on the NO side and I'm not adding. Stoked to be wrong about my old number rather than quiet about it.

NO. NOAA's own outlook puts under 1% on 2026 surpassing 2024 as the hottest year on record (~75% that it lands top-5), and Berkeley Earth plus the UK Met Office (May 2026 update) both rank 2026 as roughly the 4th-warmest year. The 2024 record was driven by the 2023-24 El Nino peak; 2025 came in 3rd, ~0.08C cooler.
The El Nino now forecast to emerge mid-2026 mostly loads onto the 2027 annual mean, not 2026 - which is exactly why forecasters flag 2027, not 2026, as the next record candidate. At 37% this sits well above the science (I'm ~5%).
What would change my mind: a rapid, strong El Nino spiking the back half of 2026 enough to lift the full-year mean past 2024, or a divergence between NOAA's series and the Berkeley/Met Office consensus.

@StevenK I didn't have any non-public information, and might have just gotten lucky. Many predicters on climate questions do a lot more math with a lot more data than I do.
Here was my thinking. As the year progressed from winter into spring, I kept noticing the direction that people were updating. It seemed to me that El Nino projections were consistently moving in the direction of "hotter", and by a few months ago, "it's going to be a record El Nino" seemed very likely. So my mental model was "we're going to get a super hot El Nino, and that's going to bump the temps later in the year such that the latter half of the year, or maybe the final quarter is hottest on record... now the only question is, exactly when will that happen, and will that be enough to tip the average for the year such that it's the hottest on record? I don't know, but it seems like the chance is closer to 50/50 than 25-30%, so I should put some mana in at these probabilities". Also, I looked at Climate Reanalyzer to get a visual sense of how far from record territory we were, and was like "yep, could happen". But you'll notice I didn't bet so as to drive the probability up much, because I wasn't very sure. And as we got into the summer and the data kept coming back "not in record territory yet" I sat on the sidelines.
@StevenK Oh, and, my biggest bets were when someone had a limit order up on the other side, so I could take that without moving the probability much. And, I had a look at other markets to get a base rate for "we know the temperature goes up on average each year, but what is the base rate of 'year X is hottest on record'?" With a probability sitting in the 20's, and people's estimate of "will X be the hottest year" for years that are so far out that we won't know the specific conditions that exist in that year for a few years yet (e. g., bets for years in the 2030's) being about 33%, I was like "well this definitely doesn't seem like a year that's less likely than the base rate to be hottest on record...". Some of my bets that bet it up to 40 were probably unwise, but this market is pretty low liquidity, so, shrug.
@StevenK yeah 50/50 why not. I have to imagine NOAA saying it's a tie are vanishingly small so I wouldn't worry about it.
@Stralor I think pretty likely conditional on it being the same up to two decimals, which in turn is probably a few %.
