i currently have an offer to begin working at a law firm after graduation. it is well-paying, but requires a lot of hours. i am currently more interested in working in ai policy but don't have any jobs lined up for that. i'm not looking hard for ai policy jobs right now.
reasons why i'd work at the law firm:
great pay/benefits
have been told it's a "good stepping stone" to other paths
i already have the offer
they will pay for bar and moving expenses
relatively intellectually interesting
reasons why i wouldn't work at the law firm:
horrible work/life balance
don't feel good about the kind of work being done
am worried about ai, and don't want to waste time doing things that don't either help ai, or that i actively enjoy
market will resolve regardless of the reason for me leaving/not joining the firm. reasons could include:
finding another job
i personally think ai is advancing too quickly and i'd rather spend time with loved ones/make art
i get fired/laid off
happy to answer questions in comments.
