@dundereloise on Twitter has been running some fun blind taste tests for a while. Wanted to make a market on this one!
If the participants can tell the difference but don't think the cast iron one is better, that resolves to NO (slight difference from twitter poll)
https://x.com/dundereloise/status/2021289544755314920

Resolves when @dundereloise announces results. Can resolve to 50% if there's something right between a YES and NO outcome (I think this is unlikely but possible). Will resolve to N/A if @dundereloise never announces the results.
I will not bet on this market to remain objective in case there's a gray area resolution.

@AndrewJewell I actually don't think it should change the terms of the test that much? Also, many nonstick pans are stainless steel.
@bens in any case, if the twitter poll participants from the first hour of the poll feel maligned, they can come here and bet in accordance with their true adjusted beliefs XD
@bens I don't think a traditional nonstick pan could give you a good sear, whereas a stainless steel pan definitely can.
@bens It's not about the stainless under the nonstick, it's about the temperature implied by using a nonstick pan. And maybe a little about the surface effects or surface chemistry, which doesn't care what's under the nonstick layer.
Oof, I bet based specifically on the nonstick pan because a sear seemed impossible. Was that update there when you created the market?
Lot of variables here that probably won't be controlled for. E.g. how much heat their stovetop can put out can determine how much cast iron vs stainless steel will matter since cast iron can hold more pre-heating heat but this matters less if the stove element has a large heat output. Also if they don't use a thermal temp gun during pre-heating, they could have significantly different initial pan temperatures by chance (you would probably want a higher initial pan temp for the stainless steel anyway to optimize for it).
@EricKdd0b3 they've been pretty scientific about previous ones, although not obsequiously so, so bet accordingly!
@bens The fact that they weren't aware at first of how non-stick pans are bad for high temperatures seems to indicate they don't have much prior experience with high heat searing/cooking, but we'll see
@bens Since the title of the market is "Does cooking in a cast-iron pan make steak better?", I think this situation should resolve "no". (I realize that doesn't match how I set up the poll)
(slight difference from twitter poll)
Well, the twitter poll also has this discrepancy between first and last sentence, so it's just choosing which piece of the twitter poll ;)
