Background
Pope Leo XIV scheduled an apostolic journey to Uruguay, Argentina, and Peru for November 6–17, 2026. The Argentine itinerary was planned for November 8–11, 2026, featuring events in Buenos Aires, Córdoba, and Luján.
Feasibility of the trip came into question in October 2026 after the Pope underwent surgery at Rome's Gemelli Hospital to remove the lower lobe of his right lung following a pulmonary adenocarcinoma diagnosis. Although his medical team reported satisfactory postoperative recovery without immediate clinical contraindications to flying, the physical demands of long-distance travel and follow-up medical evaluations have generated uncertainty regarding whether the Argentine leg will proceed on schedule.
