Background

Prozac (fluoxetine) is one of the most widely prescribed antidepressants in the United States, probably the most well known of the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs).

In the "Make America Healthy Again" executive order, it states that the commission it establishes shall:
"(iii)   assess the prevalence of and threat posed by the prescription of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, antipsychotics, mood stabilizers, stimulants, and weight-loss drugs;"

Unless otherwise specified, "Prozac" and "fluoxetine" will be considered equivalent.

Resolution Criteria

This market will resolve YES if at any point until January 20, 2029:

  • The Trump administration implements policies that explicitly ban Prozac OR

  • The Trump administration implements policies that significantly limit access to Prozac, such as:

    • Implementing restrictions that make it substantially more difficult to prescribe or obtain (including for children)

    • Penalizing or otherwise prohibiting doctors, insurers, pharmaceutical companies or other medical professionals and institutions from prescribing, manufacturing, or covering it

    • Other regulatory changes that effectively remove it from the market

This market will resolve NO if there were only changes such as:

  • The Trump administration establishes guidelines to discourage the use of Prozac

  • The Trump administration bans or limits advertisement of Prozac

  • The Trump administration bans or limits importation of Prozac from foreign countries

  • The Trump administration requires something like an additional "black box" label on it

  • The Trump administration bans the brand "Prozac" without actually limiting the use of fluoxetine
