The number to beat is $4.085 — the EIA reading for the week of August 24. Getting under $3.75 means shedding about 34 cents in nine weeks.
That is not exotic. Summer driving ends, refiners switch to cheaper winter-blend fuel in mid-September, and the national average falls through October in most years. This year's July 6 print was already $3.777. Against it: the last eight weeks have been flat rather than falling — $3.78 to $4.10, no trend — and 2026 has run structurally high all year.
The wildcard is Venezuela. The administration says the August 28 arrangement will bring pump prices down. Crude takes months to reach the pump and those fields are not producing anything new yet, so I expect approximately none of that inside this window.
What would move me: two consecutive prints under $3.90 before October (up), or a hurricane taking Gulf refining offline (down, hard).
