Background
Sweden's general election on September 13, 2026, resulted in a narrow parliamentary majority of 176 to 173 seats for the left-leaning opposition parties, led by former Prime Minister Magdalena Andersson of the Social Democrats.
Following the finalization of the vote count, incumbent Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson (Moderate Party) announced his resignation on September 17, 2026. He and his cabinet currently serve as a caretaker (transitional) government. The Speaker of the Riksdag, Andreas Norlén, is leading negotiations to propose a candidate for the next Prime Minister. Under Sweden's system of "negative parliamentarism," a proposed Prime Minister does not require an absolute majority of supportive votes to take office, provided that a majority of parliament (175 or more members) does not vote against them.
