Sinner is looking to complete his career grand slam at Rolland Garros this year. After winning four masters tournaments in quick succession, some people have expressed concerns that playing in the Italian Open would compromise him physically ahead of the French Open.
RESOLUTION CRITERIA
-Will resolve no if he wins FO
-Will almost certainly resolve yes if he withdraws ahead of Rolland Garros, unless there is some other known cause somehow completely unrelated to the Italian Open.
-Beyond that it is somewhat up to my judgement. Will consider him demonstrating large amount of fatigue in a loss, especially in a situation he would not typically struggle in (no excessive heat for instance).
- Massive fatigue/severely limited mobility or retirement in one five setter probably would not be enough for significant fatigue under normal circumstances, since to my judgement he did not drop his level much in the final last year
- Several long matches would be enough to justify normal circumstances for exhaustion
-Fatigue in extremely hot weather would probably not resolve to yes
-I would be inclined to resolve yes in the case of injury, since playing more would probably increase the risk. Might do a partial resolution there though, depending on how much it seems like overuse vs just some freak accident.
-If he shows abnormal amounts of fatigue, but goes on to win, then loses a latter match without showing fatigue, it will resolve to no
Since this is pretty subjective, I will not bet on this market.
Update 2026-05-29 (PST) (AI summary of creator comment): The creator is leaning toward resolving to approximately 20% (PARTIAL) for the current situation. Key reasoning:
The heat and Sinner's known struggles in hot conditions make a full YES resolution unlikely
However, the creator hesitates to fully resolve NO, as the additional 2 weeks of tennis may have had some marginal impact on his fitness in a very close match
@StanDolafel I think based on this in your description, this market should resolve no: "Fatigue in extremely hot weather would probably not resolve to yes". Sinner's known to have trouble with matches during hot weather. In each of the last two Australian Opens he struggled with the heat. I don't think playing Rome is what caused him difficulties today.
@polymathematic I am realizing now that I probably should have defined “extreme heat” a little more carefully. Also that trying to have a question based around causality was going to make it really subjective.
I definitely won’t resolve yes. There quite a bit of heat, and struggling in those conditions is fairly in character for him. He has also alluded to not feeling well that day, for reasons unrelated to how much he had been playing, although that could be him trying to avoid criticism for his scheduling and/or heat tolerance.
My one hesitation is that he was as close a physically possible to winning, up 2-0 5-1. If he had had even the slightest bit of extra energy, I feel like he manages to get that last game. It seems like, unless the additional 2 weeks of tennis had literally 0 impact on his fitness, he would have won this match, and survived until the weather cooled down. For that reason I hesitate to fully resolve no.
Right now I am leaning towards resolving to something like 20%
