Frank Hester is the Conservative Party's biggest donor. He has given £10 million to the party in the past year.

Yesterday it emerged that he had said some absolutely vile stuff about Diane Abbott including the following:

"You see Diane Abbott on the TV and you’re just like, I hate, you just want to hate all black women because she’s there, and I don’t hate all black women at all, but I think she should be shot."

And:

[Name redacted] and Diane Abbott need to be shot. She’s stupid … If we can get [name redacted] being unprofessional we can get her sacked. It’s not as good as her dying. It would be much better if she died. She’s consuming resource. She’s eating food that other people could eat. You know?

There have been calls to return Hester’s donation or to donate it to charity - /SimonGrayson/will-the-uk-conservative-party-retu

Abbott has reported Hester’s comments to the police:

Will this lead to Hester being arrested, charged, fined or cautioned?

Resolution notes:

  • This market applies to Hester’s comments that have already been reported or any other comments which are in any way related to Diane Abbott. If he is charged with a hate crime in relation to his comments about Abbott making him “hate all black women” that counts, but if other, unrelated comments emerge and action is taken over them then that wouldn’t count.

  • If Hester is arrested, an arrest warrant is issued or if he appears in court in relation to a crime around these comments, that will count even if he is later released without charge or found innocent. If he ends up In court over a civil matter (eg. Abbot sues him), that would not count.

  • If the Police confirm that no further action is being taken, this will resolve NO. It will not be re-resolved if they later reopen the investigation and arrest him.

  • If there is an ongoing investigation or any other reason to think that this might still happen, I will extend the end date of the market. Otherwise I will resolve to NO when we reach the closing date.

  • It’s possible that some of the money is given back or donated to charity while some is kept. If it is announced that most/the bulk/the majority is being given back or given away or if there is evidence that £5 million or more has been given back or given away, that will be enough for the purposes of this market.
