NO

Following the scandal caused by Luis Rubiales appearing to sexually assault Jenni Hermoso after Spain won the women's World Cup, the Spanish FA (RFEF) have been backing him very strongly.

Their latest move has been to threaten to pull out of EUFA or to ask UEFA to suspend them, claiming that they are in breach of the "government interference rules". This would mean that Spanish clubs including Barcelona and Real Madrid would not be eligible to play in any UEFA competitions including the Champions League.

There are four Spanish clubs who are due to play in the Champions League this year:

  • Real Madrid

  • Barcelona

  • Sevilla

  • Atletico Madrid

This market will resolve to YES if at least two of those four teams are excluded or withdrawn from the group stages of the 2023/4 Champions League. For example:

  • If they are excluded becuase RFEF's clubs are suspended

  • If they are excluded becuase RFEF is no longer affiliated with UEFA

  • If they withdraw from the Champions League out of solidarity with Rubiales

  • If they withdraw from the Champions League out of solidarity with Hermoso

  • If they commit some sort of infraction which means that they are excluded and there is a suggestion that they did so intentionally for any reason to do with RFEF or Rubiales (I will interpret this with a strong bias towards YES as it's almost unthinkable that two major teams would both accidenally disqualify themselves from the Champions League)

In any of these cases, the market will not resolve to YES until the teams have actually missed a game and the result has been declared or awarded to their opposition. If they simply announce that the teams are withdrawing/expelled but there is still an opportunity to reverse this, the market will not resolve YES until it actually happens!

Once the teams have played all six group matches, this market will resolve to NO. These final matches are due to be played on 12th September and 13th September.
