The Tobacco and Vapes Bill is due to receive its second reading in Parliament on Tuesday 16th April:

https://bills.parliament.uk/bills/3703

This is the bill which would introduce a "lifetime smoking ban" meaning that the smoking age will rise by a year every year meaning that anyone born after 2008 will never be allowed to buy cigarettes.

There has already been strong opposition from some Tories including the two most recent Prime Ministers - Boris Johnson has called the ban "absolutely nuts" while Liz Truss has called it "profoundly unconservative".

This is expected to be a free vote. How many Tory MPs will vote against it?

If you're not familiar with the Parliamentary process and how second and third readings work, you can take a look at how the gay marriage bill passed through Parliament here. That was also an example where MPs were given a free vote.

Market notes:

  • The "other" option is there if you want to bet that even more Tory MPs will vote against. If that option is popular, I will split out some more numbered buckets and anyone who has bet on other will receive shares in those new options.

  • If the vote does not go ahead as planned on Tuesday, the market will remain active until the vote on the second reading happens.

  • If Tory MPs act as tellers for the “no” option, they will count towards this number.

  • If Parliament is dissolved for a general election before the vote happens, the market will resolve to N/A.
