This is the replacement for yesterdays market which was resolved N/A due to the timer not having been properly reset by my assistant: Me.
Also this is the followup to last weeks market (link here), where we have gathered data that suggests that I use my phone less when I am blocked from social media. Baseline usage was established a week prior (see that market).
Question:
I am now unblocked from my favorite social media platform. Will my phone usage go back to baseline?
Resolution criteria:
Market resolves next tuesday, March 26th at 9:00 UTC+1
Resolves based on the number my screentime recording app shows. It has a sum function and I have reset it (proof in Comments).
Resolves YES if screen time sum over eight days shows around 58 hours again.
Resolves NO if Number is around 48 hours, still.
Resolves N/A if Number is 50<53.
Market conditions:
I'll be using my phone ad libitum just like the two weeks prior
I will not trade in this market, so i am not incentivized to skew the results
I'll be posting updates everyday with unnecessary details about my life no one has asked for.
I am officially unemployed, but do some stuff for a guy from my village. He pays me about 15€/hr to do some cleaning and renovation on a house he owns.
I am suffering from depression and tend to retreat to social media when I am overwhelmed.
I do a lot of other stuff on my phone, too. Learning two languages, learning guitar, listening to podcasts etc.
Why am I doing this?
Answer: I am trying to see if the reduction-effect on self-ban is robust or if other effects play a major role. E.g. better weather, tidied room, changed mindset etc. Next week i'll be blocking myself again to see if the reduction occurs again.
Results:
48:30 total time spend on phone. Self-ban from social media for a week either
has knock-on effects on the week after,
Or is shadowed out by other effects I.e. low sognal-noise ratio (most likely due to largely uncontrolled environment).
Or has no effect on phone usage (subjectively unlikely, I discontinued several time-consuming conversations and disputes I had on social media)
As usual the most interesting things I learned were not the main topic of this study.
The app solves a long-standing problem with tracking my sleep schedule. I used to track my sleep-wake cycle manually in my notebook wich involved a lot of guesswork. It isn't easy to kniw when exactly you slept in if you are doing so eight to ten hours after the fact.
But the first thing I do in the morning is turning off the alarm on the phone and the last thing I do before I drift off to sleep is putting my phone away. Also when i wake up in thr middle of the night i check what time it is on my phone.
This app gives me a measure of my sleep wake cycle with resolution on the scale of individual minutes. I will debug my sleep schedule next!
