I sprained and fractured* my ankle after falling while bouldering last Saturday (July 22nd). I'm currently on crutches and wearing a walking cast boot. Will I be able to run in a normal and pain-free fashion for at least half a mile any time before September 1st, 2023? (I normally am able to run several miles in a single session without any problems.)

*My doctor's orthopedics referral says it's a "closed fracture of distal end of right fibula, unspecified fracture morphology"

Update: My ankle is still a little swollen, but I can walk in a more-or-less normal fashion now. I can't run without feeling pain and putting strain on my foot, but I should be able to soon...

predictedYES

@SG good to hear that your are on the path to recovery, I wish you being able to run very soon!

How's it coming along?

@SG Here are some tips (since I also twisted my ankle last week, though I'm able to walk now):

  • If your ankle really hurts, use an ice pack. (Painkillers could also work but I haven't tried those myself, and YMMV obviously.) Even if the pain is dull, applying an ice pack for a minute won't hurt.

  • Also, if your ankle really hurts, make sure to get two crutches! It's pretty hard to walk with just one; I found myself hopping. If your ankle doesn't hurt, you should walk around (and also do light exercise that doesn't involve your legs too much, such as biking or swimming).

  • Get lots of sleep. This should be a no-brainer (even if your ankle is good again), but unfortunately in practice this is basically equivalent to having your work-life balance in good order.

That's terrible... I hope you get better soon!

I'm sorry to hear that. Hop on the topropes until you're fully healed!

According to chatGPT:

The most likely outcome is that you won't be able to run pain-free for half a mile before September 1st. Healing from a sprained and fractured ankle typically takes several weeks, and running is a high-impact activity that can put significant strain on the healing bones and ligaments. It's essential to prioritize proper healing and follow your doctor's advice and rehabilitation plan to avoid complications and ensure a safer return to running in the future. Be patient and allow sufficient time for your ankle to heal fully before attempting to resume running or other strenuous activities.

Voting yes for optimism.
