Background
April is typically an active month for tornadoes in the United States as spring weather patterns create favorable conditions for severe weather. The continental United States (excluding Alaska and Hawaii) experiences an average of approximately 170 tornadoes during April, though this number can vary significantly from year to year. April 2011 holds the record for the most tornadoes in a single month with 758 confirmed tornadoes.
Resolution Criteria
This market will resolve based on the official count of confirmed tornadoes in the continental United States during April 2025 as reported by the National Weather Service (NWS) or Storm Prediction Center (SPC).
Each answer option will resolve as "YES" if the final confirmed tornado count exceeds the specified number.
Each answer option will resolve as "NO" if the final confirmed tornado count is less than or equal to the specified number.
For example, if there are 280 confirmed tornadoes, then "Above 0" through "Above 279" will resolve as "YES", while "Above 280" through "Above 500 (or greater if their are added questions)" will resolve as "NO".
The market will use the final, official count, which may take several weeks or months after April 2025 to be fully confirmed, as tornado reports undergo verification processes.
Only tornadoes that touched down within the continental United States (the 48 contiguous states) will be counted.
Only tornadoes that occurred during the calendar month of April 2025 (April 1-30) will be counted.
