On my Manifold survey, I asked a question about the users' Big Five personality traits, where they can rank themselves as "Very low", "Somewhat low", "In the middle", "Somewhat high", or "Very high" for each trait. I'll convert this to a linear scale ranging from -2 to 2 when judging the average value of the trait for all respondents.

The Big Five personality traits are openness to experience, conscientiousness, extraversion, agreeableness, and neuroticism, often going by the acronym OCEAN. A person's "type" would be how much of each of these traits they possess. For simplicity, I'll split the possible personalities into 32 different types, based on whether people are high or low in each of the five traits. I'll denote each of these types with an acronym, similar to how Meyers-Briggs types are denoted. The first letter will be O or C depending on whether someone is high (O) or low (C) in openness to experience (the C can stand for closed, consistent, or cautious, all of which are considered antonyms or anticorrelated with openness). The next letter will be C for high conscientiousness, or S (for "spontaneous") for low conscientiousness. Then E/I for extraverted/introverted, A/D for agreeable/disagreeable, and N/S for neuroticism/emotional stability.

To judge Manifold's overall type, I'll use the average of each trait, as described above. A positive average means Manifold is high in that trait, and a negative one means Manifold is low in that trait. A value of exactly zero means that Manifold is neither high nor low in that trait, and Manifold's type will be evenly split between the types that fit with all of Manifold's other traits. For example, if Manifold has high openness and neuroticism, and low extraversion, but gets exactly zero for both conscientiousness and agreeableness, I would have to resolve equally to all four types that fit the O_I_N mold. If a type has not been submitted as an option, it counts as part of "Other", so, e.g., in the situation just described, if only OCIAN and OSIDN were options, I would resolve to 25% OCIAN, 25% OSIDN, and 50% Other.
