I am curious why the Song Dynasty?

@PatrickDelaney The Song Dynasty was famously the premodern state closest to launching an industrial revolution, given their extensive scientific and technological developments and their mass production of coal and steel on an unprecedented scale. If conditions had been significantly different, the works of the Song could have launched humanity a thousand years ahead. Barring further analysis indicating this was retrospectively extremely unlikely, this seems like history's greatest missed opportunity.

It feels sort of like a mistake to give a serious answer but the Tang dynasty had probably the highest ratio of human flourishing to mass murder which feels like it makes it a fairly strong contender.
