The UK Conservative and Unionist Party are hosting a leadership election to replace Rishi Sunak. This election process is expected to run until the 2nd of November, with voting by the party membership closing on October 31st 2024.

Before voting closes, how many televised election debates between the contenders will there be?

To qualify, a debate must:

  • Feature >50% of candidates remaining in the contest.

  • Direct interaction between candidates, i.e. they are permitted to respond to each other’s statements directly.

  • Equal representation, i.e. all candidates are allowed to speak for approximately the same time.

  • A moderator to provide questions and enforce the rules of the debate.

  • Broadcast on one of the main free to air UK TV channels.

Each answer will resolve YES when the criteria are met, if no debates are held then 0 will resolve YES at close of membership polling and all other answers will resolve NO.

No debate at all! I am somewhat surprised. But then, with the Conservatives having lost so badly, maybe broadcasters have decided the people don’t really want to hear from them!

Tonight's GB News "Hustings" does not count because it doesn't meet the "Direct interaction between candidates, i.e. they are permitted to respond to each other’s statements directly" criteria - the Express is reporting that "They will then be quizzed by members of the audience and Mr Hope one at a time so will not go head-to-head directly."

I can only really see GBNews hosting this - would you consider them one of the main free to air UK TV channels? Not really mainstream?

@jaygooby Ugh, I hate to refer to them as mainstream but they are free to air and if they were to host a debate then I would be hard pressed to exclude them. I guess amongst the selectorate they probably are a bit mainstream.

@Noit Yup! Totally understand the reasoning
