Me and the boys are debating this and it's getting heated. If we ever run trials on this, say with foam weapons, this markets resolves to the win rate of spears.

No shields.
Update 2025-04-26 (PST) (AI summary of creator comment): Equipment requirements for trials
Appropriately weighted weapons: Both the spear and the sword must simulate realistic combat weight to prevent unrealistic “swishing” or excessive force.
Spear tip modification: Attach a sandbag or similar weight at the end of the spear to approximate real balance and mass.
This is taking me a while to find the right opportunity to organize. Seems like you need appropriately weighted weapons so as not to allow the spearman to swish his weapon through the air willy nilly, but then you can't go around jabbing people in the chest with heavy poles. Would require proper equipment or at least a sandbag on the end of the spear or something.
@VAPOR I'm skeptical that any level of "general fighting utility without specific training" is going to tilt sword-ward, frankly. Spears are a historical mainstay specifically because they're pretty good in the hands of the barely trained.
@AndrewHartman Came here to say this. I had a few hours of training with the Bastardsword, but still couldn't beat someone with a spear. It is a matter of Range. The spearman gets to strike first and if the swordbearer doesn't know how to parry (which requires training) he is dead before he can strike.
@ProjectVictory I will be trying my best to make the trials happen. If recorded the footage will not be released publicly. But don't worry, you can trust the procedure to be fair, the process will be extremely adversarial.
@MichaelWheatley Will the spear be substantially longer than the sword, and will a nick on the shin by either weapon count as a point?
@Panfilo definitely longer. Rules not created yet, but I will be lobbying hard for nicks not to count.
@NoaNabeshima definitely.
Let me know if you can think of a better way to decide this so I can send the results to Team Spear.
