Alcatraz holds ten federal inmates for one week before January 20, 2029?

Trump said he wants to “reopen” Alcatraz as a federal prison. Must be one continuous week, ten inmates physically on the island, held at the same time (not sequentially.)

"Inmates" = "people who the Trump Administration thinks should be detained in a prison," does not necessarily need to be people who have been convicted of a crime.

I think the necessary renovations alone could make this impossible.

@Marnix yeah anyone who's gone on a tour in the last few years can tell that place is not ready for inmates any time soon

@ClayRosenthal renovations would be hard but ten inmates in poor conditions to serve as whatever kinda symbol he wants its to be isn’t that improbable https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/cly5d9yzr7wo.amp

Title updated to 2029, my intention was “end of current presidential term”

California will not abide it. Unlike the insane flooding the Trump admin did during the fires, opening a prison requires sustained cooperation from the state.

@Panfilo even if it's on federal land?

@AlexanderTheGreater It was closed due to how expensive it is. They’d have to get appropriations or raid FEMA or something.

@Panfilo yeah, it would be a huge money sink to overhaul. However, does he need any cooperation from California for that? It's on federal land and if he can get federal funds what legal standing does CA have to stop it?

@AlexanderTheGreater I could be wrong about their retaliatory ability to inconvenience it given the logistical relationship between the island and San Francisco. Feel free to bet it up!
