The Client Flees (Deal Fails)

A potential client reached out to me recently. He is about five years younger than me and seems to respect me and look up to me professionally. We spoke for about an hour on the phone and have continued to stay in contact, so there is already a positive relationship and a degree of trust between us.

Based on what I know about him and his needs, I believe he could be an excellent fit for another studio that is run by a good friend of mine. My friend is fairly receptive to the possibility of the referral, but I think the situation should be handled gradually and allowed to develop naturally rather than being pushed too quickly.

There is also an additional connection that makes the referral more workable: another friend of mine has done contracting work with this studio many times before, so there is an established relationship and some familiarity on the studio's side.

I don't expect to devote much effort to the opportunity. My role would primarily be to make the connection and let the existing relationships take it from there. I am also comfortable making the referral for free. My main interest is not in helping the client, but in potentially bringing a good opportunity to the studio and helping my friend’s business.

Overall, this is a low-effort, relationship-driven referral opportunity with several favorable connections already in place. I have a good feeling about the potential outcome, but I think the best approach is to take it slowly, make the introduction when the timing feels right, and avoid trying to force the result.
