If you're a sports fan, then odds are you've seen a Cazoo sponsorship or two in recent years. If you watch darts or top-tier European football, then it's a near-guarantee and you've probably wondered "Where are they getting the money for all this?"
For those unaware, Cazoo is an online used car seller based in the UK who also operated in the EU until pulling out late last year. https://www.theguardian.com/business/2022/sep/08/cazoo-to-abandon-its-business-operations-in-europe-and-cut-750-jobs
"The decision to abandon the EU comes only a few months after Cazoo agreed to sponsor the French football club Olympique de Marseille in the latest in a string of sports sponsorships as part of its aggressive growth strategy.
In football’s top EU leagues, Cazoo also counts Spain’s Real Sociedad and Valencia, France’s Lille Olympique, Italy’s Bologna FC and Germany’s SC Freiburg. Cazoo has contacted the teams in order to negotiate an “orderly wind-down” of the sponsorships.
In the UK, Cazoo retains sponsorship of Aston Villa, the Hundred cricket competition, horse racing’s Derby and even FishOMania, a sports fishing event." They also currently sponsor more than half of the PDC major events, including the World Darts Championship.
They've been listed on the NYSE since 2021 through "a merger with a special-purpose acquisition company, led by hedge fund manager Dan Och", but despite - or maybe because of - the seemingly endless number of sponsorships, their share price isn't looking good...
...so, will Cazoo ride out this storm?
If in 2023 they go into administration, or announce they're being bought out by or merged with another company - does not have to be completed in 2023, merely announced - this market will settle as YES.
Well, they have survived 2023, but barely from the sound of things: https://cardealermagazine.co.uk/publish/used-car-dealer-cazoo-says-it-faces-going-under-as-it-reveals-new-cash-crisis/295061
The bondholders have now taken over Cazoo: https://cardealermagazine.co.uk/publish/used-car-dealer-cazoo-agrees-exchange-offer-with-shareholders-as-it-continues-to-cut-debt/293339
Alex Chesterman - the founder and CEO - will have his shareholding almost wiped out from 24% to less than 2%.
The sports sponsorships are starting to tumble... https://cardealermagazine.co.uk/publish/cazoo-replaced-by-two-major-partners-as-used-car-dealer-continues-to-back-out-of-sponsorship-deals/286792
